Shar Mountain, Lake of Karanikola

Embark on a scenic journey to explore the natural wonders of Shar Mountain National Park, highlighted by a visit to the enchanting Karanikola Lake—the third largest glacial lake in the region. Nestled at the base of the Karanikola and Scarpa peaks, this pristine lake lies beneath the ridge that marks the administrative border between Macedonia and Kosovo, offering a truly unique setting for exploration.

The hiking tour to Karanikola Lake presents an opportunity for discovery and adventure, with the option to extend the experience by ascending several neighboring peaks or retracing your steps through the picturesque valley to the captivating area of Leshnica. It’s no coincidence that Leshnica is designated as part of the strictly protected zones within the national park, owing to its exceptional natural beauty and biodiversity.

As we traverse the trail, we’ll be greeted by a landscape adorned with numerous mountain rivers and streams, providing a habitat for local endemic species. The views that unfold before you are quintessentially characteristic of the majestic mountains of the Western Balkans—awe-inspiring and unforgettable.

The journey typically commences from the village of Veshala, accessible via an asphalt road that winds its way through the scenic countryside. Depending on your preferences, you have the opportunity to indulge in a traditional lunch served in local households, savoring the flavors of the region, or visit a shepherd’s farm to immerse yourself in the authentic rural lifestyle.

Prepare to be captivated by the beauty of Karanikola Lake and the surrounding landscape, as you embark on a hiking tour that promises to be both invigorating and unforgettable.
