Shar Mountain, Lake of Livadica

Embark on an unforgettable hiking adventure in the pristine wilderness of Shar Mountain National Park—a must-do experience for anyone exploring the Western Balkans or seeking the rugged beauty of the Macedonian Mountains. There are countless reasons why this journey is a standout among outdoor enthusiasts.

At the heart of this excursion lies Livadica Lake, a glacial wonder that stands as a testament to the park’s rich biodiversity. It’s not just any lake—it’s the most scientifically researched glacial lake in the region, teeming with life and natural wonders waiting to be discovered.

But the journey to Livadica Lake is an adventure in itself. You have the option to ascend via Ljuboten Peak, towering at 2498 meters—the first from the northeastern peak of the Shar Mountain range. Alternatively, if you choose the trail below the peak, you’ll traverse one of the largest stone moraines in the Western Balkans, adding an extra layer of uniqueness to your hike.

Moreover, this tour is part of the esteemed High Scardus Trail, a long-distance hiking route acclaimed as the best adventure product in Europe in 2023. As you trek along this trail, you’ll be immersed in the raw beauty of the landscape, surrounded by untamed wilderness and breathtaking vistas at every turn.

Your journey can commence from either Staro Selo or the legendary Mountain Hut Ljuboten—the oldest mountain hut in Macedonia. Here, amidst the cozy confines of this historic refuge, you’ll not only savor delicious food but also delve deep into the rich tapestry of Macedonian mountaineering history, immersing yourself in the stories and spirit of those who came before.

Prepare to be captivated by the rugged beauty and boundless adventure that awaits on this hiking tour through Shar Mountain National Park. It’s more than just a journey—it’s an experience that will leave an indelible mark on your soul.
