Peak Medenica, National Park Mavrovo

The Romans were onto something when they coined the phrase “Nomen est omen” (the name is a sign). Take, for instance, the lofty summit of Medenica Peak, soaring majestically at 2163 meters above sea level—a name that translates to “Honey Peak” in the Macedonian language. And true to its name, the experiences awaiting you on this extraordinary journey are as sweet as honey itself.

As you ascend along the hiking trail on Mount Bistra towards the summit of Medenica, you’ll find yourself traversing through a landscape rich in cultural heritage and tradition of the National Park Mavrovo. We offer several options for the ascent, each one offering its own unique perspective on the journey. With each step, you’ll be transported through time, delving into the cultural past of the region and gaining valuable insights into the endemic biodiversity that thrives in these pristine mountains.

But perhaps the most unforgettable aspect of the hike are the breathtaking vistas that unfold before you. From the summit, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Mavrovo Lake glistening in the distance, the rugged peaks of Korab, Deshat, and Krchin standing tall against the horizon, and the meandering valley of the Radika river below—a sight that will leave you spellbound.

Choose your own adventure as you embark on the ascent of Medenica Peak. Whether you opt for a circular tour starting and ending at the Frchec mountain plateau, or a traverse that culminates in the charming village of Galichnik—a bastion of the rich Mijak’s culture—the journey promises to be nothing short of extraordinary.

So come, immerse yourself in the magic of Medenica Peak, where every step is a testament to the beauty and wonder of the Macedonian mountains.
