Peak Sandaktash, National Park Mavrovo

Nestled amidst the rugged beauty of the Macedonian landscape lies an enchanting peak with a name that sparks curiosity—Sandaktash, standing proudly at 1981 meters above sea level. Its intriguing moniker is derived from the remarkable rock formations that grace its slopes, resembling ancient stone chests scattered across the land.

Embarking on the ascent of Sandaktash is not merely a hike—it’s a journey steeped in the cultural heritage of the Mavrovo National Park. The trail, starting from the quaint village of Nikiforovo, winds its way through a landscape imbued with customs, events, and legends passed down through generations. Each step along this path is a glimpse into the rich tapestry of local tradition, connecting you to the soul of the land.

As you begin your ascent from the heart of the village, you’ll pass by the legendary Peti leb (Fifth Bread) spring, its waters said to hold the secrets of a young shepherd boy’s tale—a story best savored alongside a sip of its refreshing flow. From there, the trail leads onward, meandering through pastures adorned with lush grasses and a myriad of aromatic herbs, akin to wandering through a botanical wonderland.

The journey to Sandaktash offers more than just breathtaking vistas—it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in the timeless art of shepherding. At a local sheep farm, indulge in the delectable flavors of sheep cheese, renowned as some of the finest in the Western Balkans, while gaining insight into the traditional methods of tending to the flock.

Whether you opt for a circular tour, ascending neighboring peaks and embracing the panoramic views, or choose a traverse with a descent into the village of Mavrovo, one thing is certain—this tour is a fusion of hiking expertise, mountain immersion, and an exploration of Macedonia’s rich cultural and natural heritage. It’s an adventure that promises to leave a lasting imprint on your heart and soul.
